The medicinal properties of honey are known to everyone and it has been used for centuries in the treatment of numerous medical conditions. It has incredible health benefits due to its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties which protect the organism against infections.
According to Peter Molan, who is a biochemist, the most powerful type of honey is the so called, Manuka Honey and it has incredibly powerful antibiotic properties which can kill all bacteria.
Namely, scientists have discovered an important factor known as Defensin-1 which is a powerful germ-killing compound found in this type of honey.
According to Susan M. Meschwitz, PhD, Manuka honey can destroy bacteria on different levels. For example, due to the high level of sugar in its content it uses an osmotic effect to kill the pathogens, which means that it draws water from bacteria cells, thus leaving them to dehydrate and eventually die.
Manuka honey is produced by bees that forage on the nectar Leptospermum Scoparium, as well as the tea trees and Manuka bush in New Zealand and Australia.
Antibiotics vs. Manuka Honey
According to the University of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences in Sydney, antibiotics have short lives causing bacteria to easily adapt and become resistant which makes these drugs totally useless.
The main compound methylglyoxal found in Manuka honey causes multi-system failure in the pathogens, thus killing them before they build up immunity and adapt. This is how they are unable to become resistant to it.
Manuka honey is intended for treating and preventing cancer, chronic inflammation, high cholesterol, diabetes, sinus, eye and ear infections and gastrointestinal issues. When it is applied topically, it can destroy flesh-eating bacteria and the most dangerous one known as MRSA, which makes this honey especially useful in dealing with leg ulcer and skin wounds.
Scientists also revealed that there is more clinical evidence proving the ability of honey to treat wounds than for any other pharmaceutical product.
Manuka honey is abundant in vitamins B3, B2, B5, C and A as well as in minerals such as iodine, copper, calcium, potassium, magnesium, zinc and iron.
How to identify the unique Manuka honey?
If you want to buy Manuka honey you can purchase it online or in any of the health food stores. However, be careful since recently fake honey scans have been detected.
Therefore, make sure you look only for UMF certified Manuka honey. UMF means Unique Manuka Factor – a phytochemical derived from the manuka bushes which gives this honey its unique properties.
If you cannot find the genuine Manuka honey, then purchase organic one which has been grown in an area near to where you live.
