If you have a smartphone, you are one of the millions of people who have such a gadget. It is a device that has extremely good features, usable for almost anything, like taking pictures, talking to someone, writing text messages, watching funny cat videos, GPS navigation, even accessing the Internet and it just keeps going from there.
It is a very small gadget, making our lives easier. However, did you know that your mobile phone has a detrimental effect on your overall health? This may come as a surprise to many of you.
Ever heard of cell radiation? Well, the light coming from your phone does exactly that.
“Blue light is part of the full light spectrum, which means we’re exposed to it by the sun every day. However, nighttime exposure to that light, which is emitted at high levels by smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other LED screens, may be damaging your vision. It also suppresses production of the hormone melatonin, which throws off your body’s natural sleep cues”.
Scientific studies confirmed that there is a correlation between smartphones and the following health diseases and issues:
Risk of Cancer
Scientists explain that the blue light coming from the phone affects our sleep during night, and at the same time it increases the risk of developing cancer, especially prostate and breast cancer. Naturally, the body’s own natural weapon against cancer is melatonin.
However, the blue light from your phone actually suppresses the production of this hormone. Over a long period of time, as a result of excessive exposure, the human body becomes a perfect place for developing severe health issues.
Insomnia
As mentioned before, the blue light has a negative effect over the melatonin production and levels in the body. Your body needs this hormone in order to get good quality sleep during night and you being properly rested.
Any lack of melatonin disrupts sleep patterns, causing the following issues:
- Depression
- Vision problems
- Slow responding
- Memory issues
- Cardiovascular problems
- Obesity
- Premature aging
In addition to all of these, the blue light damages the retina of the eye, also causing macular degeneration and cataracts.Scientists explain that as a result of excessive use of smartphones, 35-year old patients have the same issues as the elderly.
It is also important to notice that scientists need to conduct a more detailed research in order to support this claim. However, there are many reasons why you shouldn’t use your smartphone hours before going to bed.
